The Definition of Self-Directed Investing
Self-directed investing gives the investor the opportunity to take control over their retirement dollars. Instead of choosing from a few options like a traditional retirement account, a self-directed account allows you to invest in what you want, when you want.
Three Exceptions of Self Directed Investing
Because of the tax benefits of self-direction, the IRS has laid out strict regulations on self-directed accounts. In general, a self-directed account cannot be used to purchase life insurance. A self-directed IRA also cannot house collectables such as cars, stamps, jewelry, etc. Another prohibited transaction involves self-dealing—this means the investor (or the investor’s immediate family) cannot directly benefit from any investments in the account.
