This holiday season, our family watched a classic Christmas film, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Natali and I both felt like we were viewing the movie with a new perspective this time. It might not be obvious, but there is a parallel between the storyline and the power of real estate investing.

In case you haven’t seen National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, it’s one chapter in a series of films about a family that always has disastrous vacations. In this specific movie, Clark Griswold, the father, wants to surprise his family with a swimming pool for Christmas. However, Clark can’t afford the swimming pool outright, and he’s hanging on to the hope of a Christmas Bonus.
For a paycheck-only employee, this is a likely story. You work hard, 40 hours a week for mediocre results. And maybe, just maybe, if you’re lucky, you’ll be thrown an occasional bone.
And that’s where real estate investing comes in. It’s a chance to earn a passive income and accrue legacy wealth for your family. Not necessarily so you can make lavish purchases, but so that you can live comfortably.
